The International Society for Smart Construction and Production (SCP) proudly co-organized the Frontier Forum hosted by our official cooperative journal Journal of Building Design and Environment (JBDE), bringing together global leading scholars to discuss developmental trends and core challenges in indoor environmental quality (IEQ) research.

With the continuous advancement of built environment research, a prominent gap has long existed between mature IEQ research theories and their practical application in urban planning, public health governance and building design. To tackle this industry-wide dilemma, the special online forum themed Reflections on Future Challenges in Indoor Environmental Quality Research was held on August 31, 2026, under the joint organization of SCP and JBDE.

Keynote Speaker Profile

The forum invited Professor Pawel Wargocki from the Technical University of Denmark, a globally authoritative scholar in indoor air quality and built environment studies, to deliver the keynote speech.

With more than 30 years of research experience, Professor Wargocki is a distinguished Fellow of ISIAQ, REHVA and ASHRAE. His research outcomes laid the foundational basis for international IEQ standards, ventilation design specifications and healthy building systems. During the sharing, he profoundly analyzed the bottlenecks of traditional IEQ research frameworks, put forward the innovative ONE AIR integrated research concept and the new definition of Health-sustaining Indoor Physical Environment, and proposed actionable paths to connect academic research with national public health policies.

The online event was presided over by Professor Pasquale Avino of the University of Molise, an outstanding environmental chemistry researcher with remarkable achievements in environmental pollutant monitoring and low-carbon ecological research.

Core Highlights of the Forum

1. The forum pointed out that the focus of global IEQ research has shifted from data research to policy landing, real-scene effect verification and human actual exposure assessment.

2. Professor Wargocki suggested breaking the artificial division of indoor and outdoor air research, and realizing holistic environmental governance under a unified atmospheric research system.

3. The forum reached a consensus on promoting affordable healthy indoor environment construction and incorporating IEQ management into public health systems, providing important reference for the intelligent construction industry guided by SCP.
