Senior Research Fellow Junbo Sun Elected as One of the Youngest Lifetime Fellows of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM)

On September 25, 2025, Senior Research Fellow Junbo Sun of our team was awarded the honorary title of Lifetime Fellow by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of Construction & Structural Materials. According to IAAM, Dr. Sun is among the youngest Lifetime Fellows elected since the association was founded 15 years ago.

On the same day, the First Industrial Innovation and Development Conference of the International Association of Advanced Materials was successfully held in Ningbo. During the conference, the IAAM Asia-Pacific Headquarters was officially unveiled. In the keynote session, Professor Sun, together with Professor Dominic Alexander, a Nobel Prize nominee, and Professor Giuseppe Lacidogna, Member of Academia Europaea and Director of the Engineering Division of Academia Europaea, delivered distinguished academic presentations.

During the award ceremony, Ms. Jinlin Ye, Executive Director of IAAM Asia-Pacific, personally presented the fellowship certificate to Professor Junbo Sun. In his award speech, Mr. Ashutosh Tiwari, Secretary General of IAAM, stated, “Senior Research Fellow Junbo Sun’s research in the field of construction and structural materials has not only achieved academic breakthroughs, but also precisely addressed industrial needs and solved a number of technical challenges for the industry. This honor is a dual recognition of his research excellence and industrial contribution.” During the conference, Professor Xiangyu Wang, President of the International Society for Smart Construction and Production (SCP) and Member of Academia Europaea, held in-depth discussions with IAAM Secretary General Ashutosh Tiwari on the future development of the field and strategic cooperation between the two societies, effectively promoting important progress in international collaboration.

Junbo Sun is a Senior Research Fellow and doctoral supervisor at Curtin University. He has been listed among Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists for three consecutive years. He currently serves as Executive Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Journal of Building Design and Environment and Chair of the 11th International Conference on Smart Construction and Architecture. He has received the Gold Medal at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress from the China General Chamber of Commerce, and has been appointed as a Distinguished Expert of China Coal Construction Group. He has also been recognized as an Outstanding Young Scholar by the Western Australia Chinese Scientists Association. In addition, he is a Chartered Professional Engineer of Engineers Australia, a structural engineer at Advanced Geotechnics in Australia, a member of the Academic Committee of the Solid Waste Branch of the Chinese Ceramic Society, a young expert member of the National Additive Manufacturing Expert Committee, Chief Technology Officer of STEAM, and an expert mentor at the Microsoft China Suzhou Artificial Intelligence Industry Innovation Center. He has long been dedicated to innovative research and industrial translation in construction and structural materials. He has published 85 high-level SCI papers, including 16 ESI highly cited papers and 2 hot papers, and holds 33 authorized Chinese invention patents and 1 authorized U.S. invention patent.

Candidates must go through expert nomination, multiple rounds of review by the academic committee, and public academic presentations. The honor is granted only to scholars who have achieved original and influential accomplishments in materials science and engineering. To date, more than 4,200 scholars from over 90 countries worldwide have received this distinction.
